Fitness and Economic Health
During the last depression, New Deal funds came to parts of northern New Hampshire to build recreational facilities and promote tourism. In that pre-condo American Skiing Company world, The Civilian Conservation Corps built ski trails and the Canon Mountain aerial tramway to promote skiing as a legitimate industry in rural areas. Near Berlin, NH the city joined with the National Youth Administration to build the Nansen Ski Jump.
When it was built it was one of the tallest ski jumps in the world.It remains one of the tallest buildings in New Hampshire and shares the distinction with The Balsam’s as being one of the earliest skyscrapers built in northern New England.
It now sits abandoned near a wayside park.
Things To Know
There is a geocache nearby so if you visit you will probably meet up with cranky people with GPS receivers.
It hosted trials for the Olympics.
You have a great view of the Berlin prison across the river.
